It’s never too late to get that sexy dad bod
While scrolling through Instagram and hunting down some new people to follow I came across a post from my new inspiration, Neal from Wisconsin. Neal posted a picture of his transformation of his body back in 2014 compared to his body now, I was shocked at his results which motivated me to start taking a look at my own body and eating healthier. I reached out to Neal to talk to him about his transformation, life and being a role model for others.
Neal, you said in 2014 that was the tipping point for you. You were not happy with your body, and you were wanting to make a change in life, can you tell us more about what led up to this?
I was in Hawaii on vacation with my family at the time, and I was not happy with my body or life. I felt as if my body was falling apart and it was time to do something.
How old were you in this before picture and how old are you today?
I was 49 in that picture, and now I am 53.
Wow, that is amazing! How did this transformation happen?
I made small changes at first, I gave up french fries, and then fast food, then I started to make up my own healthy meals. That is when I realized those little things started adding up to me feeling better and slowly shedding some pounds. Those small changes led me to who I am and how I look and feel today.
There was some gym time in there also?
Yes, I started with P90X with 3 buddies. Then did a program online with Keith Lei. This no-nonsense back to the basics program has really improved my condition and my attitude following several months of overtraining. A great new perspective revisited from when I started in 2014.
How has your body transformation helped your self-esteem?
I think my self-esteem has improved tremendously. As a kid, I was always chubby and still, in my brain I still feel like that chubby kid. I don’t know if I ever willfully let go of that fat kid. I know that sometimes I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror at the gym and wonder “who’s that muscle dude?” Then I to do a double-take and see that it’s me!
I have read some of the comments on the pictures you post. How do you feel being a role model now to others?
It’s strange to think that I really am a role model to some. I love the fact that I can inspire guys my age and even younger to get themselves back into shape. So much easier to manage as you grow older than it is to get it back when you are older.
I get asked in the gym all the time how old I am, and people have a hard time believing in 53. Especially the 20-somethings. It’s really flattering to hear them say that they really wish they are in as good of shape as I am when they’re my age.
What some advice you can give to people just starting out with a workout routine?
Try not to go at it alone, get an accountability buddy. I would say that getting fit is 80% diet and 20% working out.
Where you athletic as a kid?
As a kid, I wasn’t necessarily athletic or fit, but I was active. My friends and I rode our bikes all day long during the summers we spent all of her evenings and weekends outdoors running around playing games with friends. I ran track in high school and was a pretty decent pole vaulter.
What does your workout routine look like now?
Believe it or now, low weights and high repetition. That seems to work for my body type.
Definitely and it looks like it is doing amazing things for your body. Are you dating at all?
I am in a relationship, but I tend to be very private in my social life.
That is very understandable. I tend to be that way also. What are some of your hobbies?
I like a lot of stuff, DIY stuff around the house, swimming, biking, and travel.
So what does the future hold for Neal?
I would love to get certified as a personal trainer. Maybe I might even be an underwear model.
Please check out Neal’s Instagram @neal_wisc he is a real inspiration and has a very positive outlook on life. Also, look out for him modeling the next pair of sexy underwear.
